Adventures in Hollywood

Tonight, I’m going to my first Hollywood film premiere.

This is a big deal for me since I’m a HUGE movie fan and this particular movie is a remake of my favorite movie of all time, The Women.

Here’s the backstory…

My grandmother loved movies.

My grandfather used to drop her off at the movie theater on Saturdays and she’d watch one, sometimes two matinees.

My Mom told me that he used the time to do things that my grandmother wouldn’t let him do. Like smoke cigarettes.  And install wall-to-wall carpet over her beloved hardwood floors.

I used to go to the movies a lot with my grandmother and when the VCR was finally invented we would rent all the old classics that she loved. Anything except a Myrna Loy film. My grandfather loved Myrna Loy and I think she was a little jealous. :-)

And it was with her that I first watched The Women starring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell and Paulette Goddard. It was originally released in 1939 and I thought, and still think, it is one of the funniest movies ever. Rosalind Russell is hysterical. It’s definitely a “chick flick”, so sorry guys.

Apparently someone else thought is was a great movie, too. The 2008 remake of The Women starring Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Debra Messing, Candice Bergen and Bette Midler is premiering tonight. And I have a ticket.

I can’t wait to see them all in person on the red carpet. And to see the movie. If it’s even 1/10 as good as the original, it will be great. My grandmother passed away in 1997 but I have a feeling she’s going to be with me tonight.
